Rexig Realty had no security awareness program when I joined as IT Manager and Manager of Cybersecurity in early 2023. What they had was a near-miss: a few months before my arrival, a real estate agent had received a convincing wire-fraud email during a property closing, spoofing the title company's instructions. The agent caught it - barely - but it surfaced just how exposed the organization was to the most common and most costly threat in commercial real estate.
Real estate is one of the highest-BEC-targeted sectors in North America. Closing wire fraud alone costs the industry hundreds of millions annually. A 23% baseline click rate in a firm processing high-value property transactions is not an abstract risk - it's a direct financial exposure on every deal in the pipeline.
I held dual accountability for the full IT function and cybersecurity. There was no security team to delegate to. The program had to be designed to run efficiently on a single operator's time budget while still producing meaningful, trackable behaviour change across 84 staff spanning agents, administrative staff, and leadership.

"We had one close call with wire fraud before Ben built this program. In two years since, we've had zero. That's the whole story. I can show leadership a one-page report every month and they actually understand what it means."
